Manuel Trachsel, Martin grosse Holtforth, Nikola Biller-Andorno, and Paul S. Appelbaum have published an Opinion Paper in the Lancet Psychiatry. 

For decades, sound arguments have been advanced proposing that informed consent should become a standard part of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic practice, as in other fields of medicine. Aligning with the American Medical Association's ethical stance, the American Psychiatric Association states that a “psychiatrist shall not withhold information that the patient needs or reasonably could use to make informed treatment decisions”. In most fields of health care, obtaining the patient's informed consent for treatment is regarded as a moral duty, showing both the individual's right to self-determination and the principle of patient protection.
