Short Bio

Anna Westermair (MD PhD) has been trained in medicine and psychology at the University of Heidelberg (Germany), Paris V (France), and the FernUniversität in Hagen (Germany). She is board certified in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, psycho-oncology, and palliative care. Anna has gained extensive clinical experience at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and the University Hospital Basel. Recently, she completed her PhD in Biomedical Ethics with a thesis on Ethical challenges in caring for persons with anorexia nervosa – futility and end-of-life care.

Research Interests

Anna’s research interests lie at the intersection of mental healthcare, palliative care, and biomedical ethics with a special focus on palliative approaches to caring for persons with severe and persistent mental illness.

  • Goals of care for persons with anorexia nervosa with poor prognosis – interview study with expert therapists
  • Exploring futility in mental healthcare as normative justification for palliative psychiatry – A Delphi study
  • Prevalence of severe and persistent mental illness in populations receiving palliative care
