We are pleased to announce the publication of a new paper in JMIR AI authored by Federico Germani, Giovanni Spitale, and our Director Nikola Biller-Andorno. The paper, titled «Infodemics and the Ethical Dimensions of AI in Information Dissemination», addresses the complex role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the flow of information in contemporary society.
AI holds the potential to enhance public health through well-designed information campaigns. However, it also poses significant risks, particularly as a tool for generating disinformation. This dual capacity necessitates a careful examination of the ethical challenges involved in AI-driven information dissemination.
In this paper, the authors explore key strategies for mitigating these risks, including ensuring transparency in AI datasets; implementing stricter regulations on AI-generated content; and promoting information literacy to empower the public in navigating the evolving information landscape.
The stakes are particularly high in the domains of public health and democracy, where the spread of disinformation can have far-reaching consequences. This publication contributes to the growing body of literature that calls for ethical stewardship of AI technologies to maximize their benefits while minimizing harm.
