Objectives and main areas of work:
The working group deals with conceptual and practical challenges arising from the growing importance of ethics teaching in medicine, nursing and other healthcare professions, in particular with the planning and design of innovative teaching formats for the implementation of competence-based learning objectives. The working group brings together committed ethics teachers to network and exchange ideas, as well as to (further) develop existing and new teaching formats together.
Focal points of last year's work:
The documents collected in 2022 on ethics teaching in healthcare (teaching descriptions of compulsory ethics teaching in the subject of medicine at German-speaking universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland) were evaluated as part of a qualitative hermeneutic analysis with a view to competence orientation. A publication is planned.
At the beginning of 2023, an application for funding from the “Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre” to promote teaching-related networks was approved. Under the project title “Developing, applying, reflecting on and using competence-oriented medical ethics teaching (KOMETH-Learn)”, the working group would like to intensify the professional and interdisciplinary exchange on promoting competence in medical ethics teaching for two years (April 2023 - March 2025). To support the implementation of these goals, a consultant and a research assistant have been hired for the duration of the funding period (the consultant's position currently needs to be filled for personal reasons). A moderated mailing list was set up to improve communication structures within the working group and the network.
As part of the AEM annual conference in Halle, the working group will hold a pre-conference workshop on practical aspects of competence-oriented didactics and methods in ethics teaching as well as a conference workshop on conceptual and curricular questions of competence orientation.
Planned activities:
As part of “KOMETH-Learn”, the development of a website for better (internal and external) communication of the working group and the network, a webinar series, the development of a digital toolbox for the collection of competence-oriented teaching methods and formats as well as the development of a workbook for teachers with a coordinated training concept are planned.
