At our workshop, we will investigate the potential of Serious Moral Games, i.e., videogames for learning in the domain of ethics, with a special focus on the training of medical professionals. Medical professionals of all sorts face a wide range of ethical challenges in their practices. An inability to recognize relevant aspects, solve ethical problems and overcome obstacles to moral behaviour can have serious consequences. At the same time, ethics trainers struggle to promote relevant competences in learners, as relevant theories and approaches are frequently viewed as abstract by students, who lack practical experience.
Over the past years, we have developed the Serious Moral Game uMed: Your Choice at the University of Zurich. First studies show that the game has the potential to improve students’ motivation and learning outcomes in medical ethics training. At our workshop, we will introduce uMed: Your Choice, which we aim to make available for medical ethics training internationally over the coming years. We will present the educational strategy behind the game, how it can be used for training purposes, and evidence on its effectiveness. Moreover, we will engage participants in discussions on how to improve this game and what lessons can be drawn for the development of further games.
Everybody who is interested in developing and/or using videogames for purposes of ethics training in the medical domain (and beyond), is most welcome to join our workshop.
